Saperavi 2017/18 Pheasant's Tears
This popular red is so dark that it is called black in Georgian and varies greatly according to the terroir in which it is grown. Pheasant's Tears Estate located near the village of Tibaani lies in the shadow of the 6th century monastery of St Stephen. The terroir here is special for the vines. Long summer days with evenings cooled by the breeze from the gorge, and a limestone, chalk and dark clay soil above a sandy loam mixed with gravel, providing the excellent drainage needed for the vines. Gela and Malkhaz are the wine makers producing organic wines in the traditional Georgian qvevri. This Saperavi is a bold, earthy dry red with flavours of blackcurrant and toasted almonds - good tannic structure. Ideal with grilled meats, kebabs, and stews.
